Do you aspire to become a Professional Engineer? The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is essentially the first step in the process of getting your PE licensure. Read on for some tips to prepare for the FE Electrical and Computer Exam.

FE Electrical and Computer Exam

The FE exam is a computer-based test (CBT) that assesses a candidate's understanding of basic engineering concepts. It can be taken year-round at NCEES-approved Pearson VUE test centers.

The FE exam is 6 hours long and comprises 110 multiple-choice questions. You will have 5 hours and 20 minutes to solve these questions, and there is a scheduled break for 25 minutes, an 8-minute tutorial.

What is the Ideal Time to Take the FE Exam?

Students in their senior year of an EIC/ABET-accredited undergrad engineering program or recent graduates can appear for the FE exam.

However, taking the exam as early as you are eligible is recommended. If you go for the exam during your senior year, the concepts will be fresh in your mind, and it will be relatively easy to pass the exam.

How to Prepare for the FE Electrical and Computer Exam?

Want to know How to ace the FE exam on your first try? Here are some things you can do to bolster your exam preparation.

  • Forge a Solid Study Schedule
Forging and adhering to a sound prep plan is imperative to get the desired result. Passing the FE exam is not a walk in the park, do not fall for stories on the internet where people pretend to have passed the exam with a few days of prep.

The odds are these people did not take the exam. The FE exam is demanding and requires sincere dedication, so start your prep at least 3 months before the exam and avoid distractions.

  • Master the NCEES FE Reference Handbook
The NCEES FE Reference Handbook is the only reference material you can utilize during the exam. Therefore, get a hang of the FE Reference Handbook.

You can purchase the hard copy or download the PDF version for free from the NCEES website.

  • Sign Up for a Review Course
Studying on your own without being distracted can be arduous. Enrolling in review courses on popular platforms like School of PE can significantly improve your chances of passing.

You can get in touch with expert tutors who can help you understand complex concepts, solve problems with a higher degree of difficulty, and clarify your doubts.

  • Practice is Paramount
Running out of solving time is the last thing you wish for on exam day. On average, you have 2 minutes 54 seconds to solve each question. So, take up time-based practice tests to improve your calculation speed and bolster your confidence.

When the exam date is approaching, spend a week or two solving and grading practice tests to identify the sections you could improve on.

Preparing for the FE exam can be taxing, and you may want to give up mid-way. But hang in there! Getting the PE licensure is a colossal feat in an engineer's career. So, getting past the FE early in your career is a shrewd decision.

Avoid cramming up the night before the exam and get a good night's sleep.

All the best!
